Quick answer

Our top pick in South Africa
22Bet is our top pick in South Africa right now. International sportsbook and casino open to South African players, with a 100% first deposit bonus and markets on football, rugby and cricket. BetWinner is next in our ranking.
18+ · New customers · T&Cs apply
The right choice depends on how you bet. Football and rugby punters who build multiples should compare market depth and bonus wagering; if you already hold crypto, a site that pays out in coins can be quicker than a card or bank withdrawal.
Provincial licences
South Africa licenses bookmakers province by province. Each provincial gambling board issues its own bookmaker licences under the National Gambling Act, 2004, and the National Gambling Board publishes a verified list of licensed operators by province.

Well-known locally licensed names include Hollywoodbets, Betway, Sportingbet and Supabets. The sites in our table are international brands: they accept South African players and operate under licences issued outside South Africa, which they name on their own websites.
Crypto
Crypto has become a popular way to fund international betting accounts from South Africa, because it avoids card declines and moves quickly once the network confirms it. Several sportsbooks in our table also accept coins next to their usual payment methods.

Welcome offers
The offers in our table are deposit bonuses or rakeback deals rather than free money: the bonus is added to your first deposit, or a share of your stakes comes back, and wagering applies before you can withdraw it. Some locally licensed bookmakers give a small free bet on sign-up, usually once your FICA documents are approved.

Deposits and withdrawals
South African bookmakers rely on instant EFT, vouchers and cards for deposits, with withdrawals usually paid to a bank account. International sites lean more on cards, e-wallets and crypto, so check the cashier for the methods available to you.

| Method | Deposits | Withdrawals | Speed | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Instant EFT | Common at local bookmakers | Not used for payouts | Credited within minutes | Pays straight from your online banking |
Vouchers (1Voucher, OTT) | Common at local bookmakers | Not used for payouts | Credited once the PIN is entered | Bought with cash at shops |
Visa / Mastercard | Widely offered | Sometimes | Deposits fast, payouts slower | Some banks decline gambling transactions |
Bank transfer | Rarely used | Main payout route at local sites | One to a few working days | Account must be in your own name |
Crypto | International and crypto sites | International and crypto sites | Depends on the network | Match the coin and network exactly |
E-wallets (Skrill, Neteller) | Some international sites | Some international sites | Usually fast | Fees can apply when you cash out to a bank |
Tax
For recreational punters, no. SARS treats occasional gambling winnings as receipts of a capital nature rather than income, and bookmakers do not deduct withholding tax from payouts. A 15% withholding tax on large wins was proposed more than a decade ago but was never introduced.

The picture changes if betting is your business: someone who bets systematically to earn a living can be taxed on the profit as income. Gambling taxes on the industry are paid by operators to the provinces, and National Treasury published a discussion paper in November 2025 proposing an additional national tax on online betting operators.
A national tax on online betting operators is still a proposal. It would be charged on operators’ gross gambling revenue, not deducted from your winnings.
Cashing out
Locally licensed bookmakers must verify your identity under FICA before they pay out, usually with your South African ID or passport and a proof of address. International sites run their own KYC checks, which can ask for similar documents before the first withdrawal.

Upload your ID and proof of address as soon as you open the account, so the first payout is not held up.
Finish or cancel any active bonus — most block withdrawals until the rollover is complete.
Withdraw to a bank account, card or wallet in your own name.
Expect bank payouts to take longer over weekends and public holidays.
For crypto, double-check the address and network before you confirm.
Mobile
Most South Africans bet on a phone, and every site in the table runs in a mobile browser. Some international brands offer an Android app as a download from their own website rather than through Google Play, so install it only from the official site.

Sports
Football leads the way, with the PSL, Bafana Bafana and the English Premier League drawing the most interest. Rugby — the Springboks, the URC and the Currie Cup — and Proteas cricket matter far more here than in most African betting markets.

Three selections at 1.50, 1.80 and 2.10 turn a R1,000 stake into a possible R5,670 — and a single losing leg sinks the slip. Put your own odds into the calculator to see the return.
Beyond sport
Horse racing has a long betting tradition in South Africa, with tote and fixed-odds betting on meetings such as the Durban July. Lucky Numbers markets, where you bet on the draws of lotteries around the world, are a staple at local bookmakers.

Aviator and other crash games follow a multiplier that climbs until it stops at a random point; you win only if you cash out before then. A round lasts seconds, which makes a firm budget and time limit essential.
Regulation
Sports and horse racing betting are legal for adults aged 18 and over, and provincial gambling boards license bookmakers to take bets online. Online casino games are different: the National Gambling Act, 2004 does not provide for licences for interactive casino gaming, so no South African licence covers them.

Change is under discussion. The Remote Gambling Bill, introduced in Parliament in 2024, would create a national licensing system for online gambling, and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition is reviewing the gambling laws, but neither has changed the rules yet.
How we compare
Each site in our South African table is presented on the same six points, so a crypto casino and a traditional sportsbook can be weighed side by side.

The licensing authority and licence number the operator states.
Cards, e-wallets, EFT and crypto, and whether each one also works for withdrawals.
Rollover, qualifying bets, minimum odds and expiry next to the headline offer.
Stated payout times, limits and the checks needed before the first payout.
Mobile performance on prepaid data, app availability and account limits.
PSL, Premier League, rugby and cricket markets, plus in-play betting.
