How a mobile money deposit works
Open the cashier, pick Airtel Money or TNM Mpamba and type the amount in kwacha.
Type the phone number linked to your wallet, exactly as it is registered.
Approve the prompt on your phone with your PIN — nobody from a bookmaker will ever ask you for it.
Wait for the confirmation SMS, then check that your betting balance has gone up before you place a bet.
When a mobile money deposit does not arrive
- No PIN prompt on your phone: make sure the number in the cashier is the one in your handset, then start the payment again rather than sending money manually.

Betting tax in Malawi in 2026
Withholding tax on winnings is how Malawi taxes punters, and the rules changed twice within four months: the tax-free thresholds were scrapped and the rate went up at the end of 2025, and casino payouts were given their own rate in April 2026.

Until the end of 2025, the first MK100,000 of a betting win and the first MK500,000 of other gambling wins were free of tax, and the rate was 10%. The Taxation (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2025 removed those thresholds, so every win is now taxed however small, and the 15% withheld is a final tax. The Act defines winnings as any payment made to a person who wins a bet, a gamble or any gaming activity, including a lottery.
The Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2026, in force since 15 April 2026, moved casino gaming payouts to a separate 10% rate. The tax is withheld by licensed operators, who account for it to the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).
The 2026/27 Budget Statement of 27 February 2026 described the 15% on sports betting and lotteries as a final withholding tax on withdrawals. Your bookmaker’s terms show at which point it takes the deduction.
Cashing out
Withdrawing betting winnings in Malawi
Local bookmakers normally send winnings back to the Airtel Money or Mpamba number you deposited from, while international sites pay through whatever their cashier supports — often e-wallets, cards or crypto. The first payout is usually the slowest, because that is when identity checks take place.
